Major Sports In Greater Phoenix

Greater Phoenix is a hot bed for competitive sports and is one a few cities that have a franchise in all major sports. It has hosted the NFL Super Bowl and the MLB World Series. And it boasts the most attended event on grass, the FBR Phoenix Open, the most attended tournament on the PGA Golf Tour.

Major Sport Franchises.

Greater Phoenix is home to the MLB Arizona Diamondbacks, the NBA Phoenix Suns, the NFL Arizona Cardinals (Glendale) and the NHL Phoenix Coyotes (Glendale) and the WNBA Phoenix Mercury.

College Football.

Metro Phoenix is one of the very few cities that hosts two college football bowl games including the Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium and the Insight Bowl at ASU Stadium in Tempe. The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is among the major bowl rotation that hosts the BCS National Championship Game.

Major Golf Tournaments.

There are two major golf tournaments that have regular stops in Greater Phoenix including the FBR Phoenix Open held during late January and early February each year. It is the most attended PGA tournament with an attendance of over 550,000 enthusiasts at the 2008 tournament which is held at the Scottsdale TPC.

The Safeway International LPGA Tournament is held during late March each year at the Superstition Golf and Country Club near Apache Junction in the shadows of the Superstition Mountain.

Cactus League Spring Training.

Greater Phoenix also plays host to seven major league baseball teams each spring as part of the Cactus League. The San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Anaheim Angels conduct their annual training programs in the metro area, while the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and the Chicago White Sox train in Tucson.
