About Photographer Mike Koopsen

Mike Koopsen is a fine art photographer whose work is strongly influenced by the natural world, wildlife, landscapes and the cultures he has encountered during decades of travel. He began experimenting with photography more than 25 years ago and went on to photograph subjects across nearly 70 countries, with the American Southwest becoming an especially important part of his portfolio.

Koopsen's award-winning photographs have appeared in books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, videos and websites. His Southwest photography includes Monument Valley, Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell and other iconic Arizona landscapes.

His goal is not simply to record a location, but to capture light, atmosphere, form and a sense of connection with the natural environment.

Mike Koopsen's Landscape Photography

Composition, light, shadow, texture, scale and mood are central to Koopsen's landscape photography. Monument Valley is particularly suited to that approach because the isolated sandstone buttes create bold shapes while changing desert light continually alters their color and appearance.

The two photographs on this page emphasize the classic Monument Valley landscape while allowing the formations, open desert and enormous sky to provide the visual impact. Additional Koopsen galleries feature a broader range of Southwest landscapes, wildlife and seasonal conditions.
